"Meerut nigam aapki maut ka swagat karta hai". This is what welcomes you to one of the elite colonies of Meerut. Not only this, as we proceed, we find HEAPS of sewage and pools of dirty sewage water on the roads and the streets. Question arises : What is the municipality doing ? Answer: They're drawing all the filth and trash from the manholes and pumping it on to the roads. To what effect ? Well, to bring everything back to square one ! Another question arises : What are we doing about it ? Answer : Nothing or probably discussing it over a cup of coffee or the morning walk.
So who is to be blamed ? Us. Why ? Because we are the ones who suffer, because we are the ones who crib and because we are the ones who do nothing about it besides grudging the municipality. Who has the time to do anything about all this ? Family, kids, school, college, office are exhausting enough. Aren't they ? Well if we are such busy bees, then we have absolutely no right to talk or express our contempt over these issues because we shouldn't have enough time to notice them. Right ? But no. We have all the time in this world to observe even the minutest of disarrays around us. But when it comes to getting up and doing something against them, we have our cups of tea and group of friends waiting to discuss it with !!
It is not that nobody comes forward to help or participate. But the numbers are shameful. Scores of people stepped up to make a difference after the recent Mumbai Incident and the result is there for all to see. One incident changed the whole politics of the country. It brought a new lease of life to our democracy. Similar tactics can be employed at smaller levels. If people from the colony get together and take things in their hands, I believe
that within a week, we'll have cleaner roads and a much healthier environment to live in. But then a joint effort is necessary.
The slackness of the municipality cannot be ignored as well. Their proactive and prompt action is the key to smoother functioning of the city in all its spheres. Better decisions and judgements have to be taken by them to reinforce our faith. The blame game can go on for an eternity but somebody has to shoulder the responsibility. And if we stand shoulder to shoulder in this attempt to cleanse our surroundings, there is nothing that can stop us in our undertaking. Combined efforts will yield an effective outcome. So lets not watch TV for a few days, or go for parties and dinner and make our hometown a better and beautiful place to live in !
